those were knowledgeable in the vedāṅga-s, those who were devoted to contemplation of the supreme being, those who were immersed in the supreme lord and bards who knew the ancient tales.
वे वेदांगों के जानकार थे, वे जो परम सत्ता के चिंतन में समर्पित थे, वे जो परम प्रभु में लीन थे और जो प्राचीन कथाओं को जानते थे।
O king! There were also raconteurs, ascetics, those who dwelt in the forests and brāhmana-s who read divine tales in melodious voices.
हे राजा! वहाँ भिक्षुक, तपस्वी, जंगलों में रहने वाले और ब्राह्मण भी थे जो मधुर स्वर में दिव्य कथाएँ पढ़ते थे।
Surrounded by these and many others who were skilled in recounting stories, Pāṇḍu's son travelled like Vāsava surrounded by the Marut-s.

and sacred places of pilgrimage. Reaching the source of the Gāṅga, the lord began to live there.
और पवित्र तीर्थ स्थान. गंगा के उद्गम स्थल पर पहुँचकर भगवान वहीं रहने लगे।
O Janamejaya! Now listen, as I tell you, about the wonderful act that the pure-souled charioteer, who was foremost among the Pāṇḍu-s, performed.
हे जनमेजय! अब सुनो, जैसा कि मैं तुमसे कहता हूं, उस अद्भुत कार्य के बारे में, जो पांडु-वंश में अग्रणी, शुद्ध-मन वाले सारथी ने किया था।

..by the learned and great-souled ones who were always unwavering in their vows and they successfully consecrated there. As a result of this, the source of the Gāṅga became extremely beautiful.

One day, when this was going on, the son of Kuntī and Pāṇḍu entered the Gāṅga to have a bath.

O king! He performed his ablutions and offered water to his grandfathers. He was about to climb out of the water, wishing to perform rites to the fire.
हे राजा! उन्होंने स्नान किया और अपने दादाओं को जल अर्पित किया। वह अग्नि को संस्कार देने की इच्छा से पानी से बाहर निकलने ही वाला था।

अपकृष्टो महाबाहुर्नागराजस्य कन्यया अन्तर्जले महाराज उलूप्या कामयानया
O great king! The mighty-armed one was grasped and pulled into the water by Ulūpī, daughter of the king of the nāga-s, who could travel where she willed.
हे महान राजा! उस महाबाहु को नागों के राजा की पुत्री उलूपी ने पकड़ लिया और पानी में खींच लिया, जो जहां चाहे वहां जा सकती थी।
There, in the revered palace of the nāga named Kauravya, the Pāṇḍava saw a fire that had been built up well.
वहाँ, कौरव्य नामक नाग के प्रतिष्ठित महल में, पांडव ने एक आग देखी जो अच्छी तरह से बनी हुई थी।
Kuntī's son Dhanañjayā performed his rites in that fire. Witnessing the unhesitating offering of oblations, Hutāśana was satisfied.
कुंती के पुत्र धनंजय ने उसी अग्नि में उनका संस्कार किया था। निःसंकोच आहुतियाँ देते हुए देखकर, हुताशन संतुष्ट हो गया।
After having performed his rites before the fire, Kuntī's son smilingly uttered these words to the daughter of the nāga king.
अग्नि के समक्ष अपना संस्कार करने के बाद कुंती के पुत्र ने मुस्कुराते हुए नाग राजा की बेटी से ये शब्द कहे।

किमिदं साहसं भीरु कृतवत्यसि भामिनि कश्चायं सुभगो देशः का च त्वं कस्य चात्मजा
"O beautiful one! O timid one! How did you perform such a courageous act? What beautiful land is this? Whom do you belong to and whose daughter are you?"
"हे सुन्दरी! हे डरपोक! तूने इतना साहसी कार्य कैसे किया? यह कैसी सुन्दर भूमि है? तू किसकी है और किसकी पुत्री है?"

Ulūpī replied: "O Pārtha! The serpent Kauravya is descended from the lineage of Airāvata. I am his daughter and a serpent named Ulūpī.
उलूपी ने उत्तर दिया: "हे पार्थ! कौरव्य नाग ऐरावत के वंश का वंशज है। मैं उनकी पुत्री और उलूपी नामक नाग हूं।
O Kaunteya! I saw you descend into the water to have a bath and was robbed of my senses by the god of love.
हे कौन्तेय! मैंने तुम्हें स्नान करने के लिए पानी में उतरते देखा और प्रेम के देवता ने मेरी इंद्रियाँ छीन लीं।
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! The god of love is churning me. I am yet a maiden. Please me today by giving yourself to me."
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! प्रेम का देवता मुझे मथ रहा है। मैं अभी तक कुंवारी हूं. आज अपने आप को मुझे सौंपकर मुझे प्रसन्न करो।”
Arjuna said: "O fortunate one! I have been commanded by Dharmarāja to observe brahmacarya for twelve years and do not have control over myself.
अर्जुन ने कहा: "हे भाग्यशाली! मुझे धर्मराज ने बारह वर्षों तक ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करने और स्वयं पर नियंत्रण न रखने की आज्ञा दी है।
O dweller in the water! I do wish to do that which brings you pleasure. But never before this have I spoken that which is untrue.
हे जल में रहने वाले! मैं वह करना चाहता हूं जिससे आपको खुशी मिले। परन्तु इसके पहले मैंने कभी भी वह बात नहीं कही जो असत्य हो।

कथं च नानृतं तत्स्यात्तव चापि प्रियं भवेत् न च पीड्येत मे धर्मस्तथा कुर्यां भुजंगमे
O serpent-maiden! How can I bring pleasure to you and yet not do that which is untrue? How can I not violate dharma?"
हे नागकन्या! मैं आपको खुशी कैसे दे सकता हूं और फिर भी वह काम नहीं कर सकता जो असत्य है? मैं धर्म का उल्लंघन कैसे नहीं कर सकता?”

उलूप्युवाच जानाम्यहं पाण्डवेय यथा चरसि मेदिनीम् यथा च ते ब्रह्मचर्यमिदमादिष्टवान्गुरुः
Ulūpī replied: "O Pāṇḍava! I know why you are roaming the earth. I know that you are observing brahmacarya on the instructions of your superior.
उलूपी ने उत्तर दिया: "हे पांडव! मैं जानती हूं कि तुम पृथ्वी पर क्यों घूम रहे हो। मैं जानती हूं कि तुम अपने वरिष्ठ के आदेश पर ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन कर रहे हो।"

परस्परं वर्तमानान्द्रुपदस्यात्मजां प्रति यो नोऽनुप्रविशेन्मोहात्स नो द्वादशवार्षिकम् वने चरेद्ब्रह्मचर्यमिति वः समयः कृतः
This was the rule you made among yourselves for Drupada's daughter, that anyone deluded enough to enter would retire to the forest and observe brahmacarya for a period of twelve years.
द्रुपद की पुत्री के लिए तुम लोगों ने आपस में यही नियम बनाया था कि जो कोई भी धोखे से जंगल में प्रवेश करेगा, वह जंगल में चला जाएगा और बारह वर्ष की अवधि के लिए ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करेगा।
The exile is therefore for the sake of Draupadī. You are observing that dharma. But in this case, dharma does not suffer.
इसलिए वनवास द्रौपदी के लिए है। आप उस धर्म का पालन कर रहे हैं. लेकिन इस मामले में, धर्म को नुकसान नहीं होता है।

परित्राणं च कर्तव्यमार्तानां पृथुलोचन कृत्वा मम परित्राणं तव धर्मो न लुप्यते
O large-eyed one! It is your duty to save those who are distressed.By saving me, dharma is not violated.
हे विशाल नेत्रों वाले! जो लोग संकट में हैं उनकी रक्षा करना आपका कर्तव्य है। मुझे बचाने से धर्म का उल्लंघन नहीं होता।

यदि वाप्यस्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मोऽपि स्याद्व्यतिक्रमः स च ते धर्म एव स्याद्दत्त्वा प्राणान्ममार्जुन
O Arjuna! Even if there is a slight transgression of dharma, by granting me life, you will achieve greater dharma.
हे अर्जुन! यदि धर्म का थोड़ा-सा भी उल्लंघन हो तो मुझे जीवनदान देकर तुम्हें महान धर्म की प्राप्ति होगी।
O Pārtha! O lord! I desire you. Desire me in return. That is the view of those who are rigid in their vows. Know that if you do not do this, I will certainly die.
हे पार्थ! हे भगवान! मुझे आपकी इच्छा है। बदले में मुझे चाहो. यह उन लोगों का विचार है जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ हैं। यह जान लो कि यदि तुम ऐसा न करोगे तो मैं अवश्य मर जाऊँगा।
O mighty-armed one! Grant me life and achieve supreme dharma. O supreme among men! I am now seeking refuge with you.
हे महाबाहु! मुझे जीवन प्रदान करें और परम धर्म प्राप्त करें। हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं अब आपकी शरण में हूँ।
O Kaunteya! You have always protected those who are weak and without protectors. I am miserable and weeping and am seeking refuge with you.
हे कौन्तेय! आपने सदैव निर्बल और रक्षक विहीन लोगों की रक्षा की है। मैं दुखी हूं और रो रहा हूं और आपकी शरण मांग रहा हूं।

याचे त्वामभिकामाहं तस्मात्कुरु मम प्रियम् स त्वमात्मप्रदानेन सकामां कर्तुमर्हसि
I am overcome with desire and am seeking you. Do that which is pleasurable to me. Satisfy my desire by giving yourself to me."
मैं इच्छा से अभिभूत हूं और तुम्हें ढूंढ रहा हूं। वही करो जो मुझे आनंददायक लगे. अपने आप को मुझे देकर मेरी इच्छा पूरी करो।”
Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing these words Kaunteya then did what she wanted, accepting dharma to be the reason.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इन शब्दों को सुनकर कौन्तेय ने धर्म को कारण मानकर वही किया जो वह चाहती थी।
The powerful one spent the night in the palace of the serpent. When the sun rose, he too arose from Kauravya's abode.
उस शक्तिशाली ने नाग के महल में रात बिताई। जब सूर्योदय हुआ तो वह भी कौरवों के निवास स्थान से उठे।
